Beautiful Temakizushi Party at Home
Hosting a temakizushi (hand-rolled sushi) party is one of the simplest and most delightful ways to enjoy sushi at home.
Fresh sashimi, warm sushi rice, and crisp nori come together for an interactive and festive table.
I discovered how fresh and varied the sashimi packs at Meidiya are—such a treat to work with.
To prepare the sushi rice, I fanned it with a hand-crafted uchiwa made by my katazome artist friend @yumiko_szk, giving the process a touch of artistry and mindfulness.
How to make Sushi Rice (2 cups)
- Cook Japanese short-grain rice.
- Mix 1–1.5 tablespoons rice vinegar, 1 tablespoon sugar, and 1 teaspoon salt per cup of rice. Adjust to taste.
- Pour the mixture over hot rice and fold gently. Avoid overmixing.
- Fan the rice to release excess moisture. Repeat a few times to bring it to perfect texture.
- Serve with nori sheets and your favorite toppings.
