This is a former house of Makasako Shirasu, Japanese author and collector of fine arts in early 20th century.
Her husband is even more well known as bureaucrat and businessman (Jiro Shirasu)- but there are so much fans of her intrigued by her charismatic aesthetic & lifestyle.
This house with thatched roof, is originally a typical Japanese farm house, and it was renovated in 1942 when the family moved in from their life in center of Tokyo.
The farmhouse architect is super simple.
The couple believed that house should be imperfect to start with, and it should be adjusted with the way their changing lifestyle- so they kept renovating.
The gallery, or the house… is a bit of wow experience.
The collection of kimonos, furniture, arts, and antique dishes (she has super taste!) are of course wonderful.
But moreover, it has organic nostalgia, with some perfection of aesthetics and comfortableness (awesomeness maybe) that will never be outdated.
It was a nice inspiring visit, to rethink about lifestyle centered way of living.

白洲次郎さん＆正子さんご夫妻の旧邸宅、武相荘での夏展です。
以前、美の巨人たちか何かの番組で見かけて以来、ずっと行ってみたかったのをふと思い出し、半日足らずのショートトリップです。
古民家に足を踏み入れた瞬間に、なんて心地の良い空間。。。と感動でした。
選び抜かれたインテリアや空間の使われ方など、古いのに時代を感じることなくただただ、シンプルにセンスが良く、落ち着くのです。
展示されている素敵な器や着物の数々も、コレクターとしてではなく、あくまでもご自身が日常で使うことを前提にしたコレクションであるという点も、はっとします。
単純に正子さんのセンスが良いのはもちろんながら、書斎に所狭しと並ぶ、古今東西幅広いテーマの本の数々からも、飽くなき探求・研究に裏付けられているのも感じます。
また、正子さんの、家や、コレクションに対する哲学や言葉も数多く展示してあり、どれもとても考えさせられるものがありました。
都心から離れて、周りに特に何かがあるわけではなくても、訪問客が絶えなかったというエピソードにもとても納得です。
ちなみに、武相荘。白洲次郎さんのユーモアから「武蔵の国と相模の国の境に位置する」事と「無愛想」を掛けたそうです。

また、レストラン&喫茶では白洲次郎さんの愛した親子丼＆カレーや、ギャラリーショップでも骨董含めた素敵な器の数々があり、是非またゆっくり伺いたいと思いました。
